Pandrol: The trusted names in rail infrastructure have joined forces. The power of One. Find out More.

John Pettitt

Head of Sales and Marketing

In a nutshell, what do you do?

Market and sell the whole Vortok product range within the UK and certain export markets.  I get involved with product development too because of my hands-on experience of working over a broad spectrum of the rail industry.

What made you decide to do it at Vortok?

I’ve worked in the rail industry since I left school and wanted to work within a company that focuses solely on that sector.   Vortok’s broad product range made it challenging; my railway experience has increased tenfold.

What excites you most about your work?

Having the opportunity to make a real difference to the rail industry.

Tell me about your 2 biggest achievements before you joined Vortok?

As a Project Engineer at British Rail Engineering I helped deliver a contract to supply freight wagons to Tanzania – we did it on time and in budget.

Setting up a railway equipment hire depot from scratch and getting it running at a profit within 6 months.

What is the most interesting project you’ve worked on since you joined Vortok?

Getting involved right from the outset in the development of Vortok Stressing Rollers.   I saw this project right through from helping Network Rail identify the problem to marketing the product.  We achieved £0.5 million sales within a week of approval and won a Rail Industry Award for Innovation and the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the innovation category.

If you could solve one problem in the railway industry, what would it be?

Change the public’s perception of the railways.

How do you relax?

Mountain biking, fishing, golf, photography, driving and travelling.
